The Freshman
When I was young I knew everything
and she a punk who rarely ever took advice
now i'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice
I can't be held responsible
cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
she fell in love in the first place
For the life of me I cannot remember
what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
for the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
we were merely freshmen
My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
his girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says
We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
we never talk of our lacking relationships
and how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
we fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

I love this song's gritty realism. It's about how we think that nothing will harm us, and nothing is ever our fault when we are young. Our high school and college years are spent "expirementing" with deadly things, alchohol, sex, drugs etc.., and society just encourages it. I think of how many kids have been killed or injured by the stupid "freshman" antics. The drunk high school girl that is in a coma from wrecking her car. The college guy that drowned on his own vomit, etc..
The last verse then brings it to the "emotional" problems we carry with us from our youth. "we've tried to wash our hands of all of this" but we can't wash our hands of the past. Our actions follow us everywhere we go, no matter how long ago they occured.
These guys aren't Christians, but they sure hit the mark with "i cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins, we were merely freshman" Isn't that the thought of non-believers today. They never think they'll pay for the sins they commit.
As someone who wished they were wise, once told me .::coughcough::. 'It's the past, don't let it haunt you. Just let it go' .::coughcough::. Thought I would share.
YAYA! I left a comment and for once it wasn't mean!..did I say that out loud?
